Taking Renagel®

Taking all of your tablets

Renagel is a phosphate binder. It binds phosphate from food in the digestive tract and so reduces serum phosphate levels in the blood.

Your doctor will advise you how many tablets to take. This can range between one and five tablets per meal. The exact number of tablets you need to take will depend on your serum phosphate levels, what type of food you eat and how large your meals/snacks are. Your doctor will check the levels of phosphate in your blood periodically and he/she may adjust the number of tablets when necessary to reach an adequate phosphate level.

Because Renagel binds phosphate from food that you eat, it is necessary to take it with every meal in order for it to work. If you miss a meal, it is not necessary to take your phosphate binder because there is no phosphate to bind.
